It is important that all navigators fully understand biosimilars so that they can address the “nocebo” effect and help implement strategies to optimize their use, ensuring that patients receive cost-effective treatment without compromising quality of care.

Although rare cancers affect few people, collectively they impact hundreds of thousands of Americans annually, often leaving patients in a diagnostic limbo due to limited research and expertise. Patient-centric, collaborative navigation approaches are key to shedding light on these overlooked conditions, potentially transforming the landscape of rare cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship for the better.

Along with survivor mentors are other caring individuals who desire to make a positive impact by volunteering to support people with cancer; this year, you can become an advocate, too!

As we reflect on the many steps forward navigation has taken in 2024, it’s crucial that we also look ahead at the opportunities for advancement in 2025, collectively and individually.

The term “lay navigator” is derogatory toward the patient navigators who have training in an oncology health–related field and who are recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as professionals entitled to reimbursement for their specialized services.

With age a known risk factor for most cancers, the expectation is for older adults to have the highest frequency of new diagnoses. However, recent cancer incidence rates show that with each successive generation since the baby boomers, cancer incidence has decreased, with one exception—Generation X.

Directing efforts toward cancer prevention can reduce disease burden and lower treatment costs. Here are a couple of trends outside the norm of prevention that represent highly creative thinking as new guidelines and research are adapted into oncology care.
