Navigation Reimbursement Resources and More

July 2024 Vol 15, No 7

A professional organization exists to advance a particular career discipline, support the interests of people working in that discipline, and serve the public good. It has core foundational pillars, including evidence-based member benefits such as standards, education, journals, and conferences. These training and learning venues need to be current and evolving with timely practice updates for the membership.

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) recently placed on its website a Navigation Reimbursement Resources section to enhance one’s understanding of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule that includes policies on coding and payment for principal illness navigation services. This timely topic of interest in oncology navigation will be updated as new information and evidence-based practice are released. If you are working toward or implementing navigation reimbursement, AONN+ is collecting best practices and case studies to share with membership at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Since the Oncology Navigation Standards of Professional Practice were foundational to this legislation, they are a critical resource on the same site.

The website also has upcoming education and training shared in the discussion board. How to improve support for people living with metastatic breast cancer and a webinar titled “Exploring Religious Literacy and Spirituality in Cancer Care” are the latest topics. And a “Catch” is considered a navigation win where the navigator catches an issue and intervenes to correct it, benefiting the patient, and providing the best practice outcome. These member stories are aligned with standardized navigation metrics to highlight return on investment, patient outcomes, or patient experience.

You, as an oncology navigator who consistently seeks knowledge that reflects current navigation practice, should continue to explore the resources and education on the AONN+ website. It is your home to connect, learn, and share common interests.

That's My Take.
