At the recent AONN+ Annual Conference, Ms Sanborn, Infectious Disease – Host Defense Team Nurse Practitioner at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, provided an in-depth look at the current state of pediatric cancer, highlighting the crucial role of pediatric nurse navigators.

Directing efforts toward cancer prevention can reduce disease burden and lower treatment costs. Here are a couple of trends outside the norm of prevention that represent highly creative thinking as new guidelines and research are adapted into oncology care.

Breast cancer nurse navigation was created to guide patients through challenges and foster relationships between patients and providers. However, these navigators face significant challenges to providing highquality care in health systems that are siloed and have a mix of private and employed medical staff.

By learning more about the social experiences of people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, with respect to diagnosis disclosure, cancer navigators, nurses, oncologists, and mental health professionals will be better equipped to support the psychosocial needs of patients and their families.

In this second installment of a 5-part series, the authors provide the tools for navigators to effectively guide patients through the clinical trial experience.

A CATCH is a navigation success story where a navigation tactic improved a patient’s situation. This month, we profile the experience of a navigator who intervened to address a patient’s suicidal ideations and mental health support needs.
