JONS welcomes articles relevant to nurse and patient navigation in oncology. The editors invite authors to submit articles in the following categories: original research, review articles, case studies, and commentaries.
Manuscripts submitted to JONS must be original and must not have been published previously, either in print or in electronic form. Manuscripts cannot be submitted elsewhere while under consideration by JONS. These restrictions on prior publication, however, do not apply to abstracts or poster presentations published in connection with scientific meetings.
All manuscripts are subject to the journal’s peer-review process, and acceptance is based on that review. Most articles will have to be revised based on reviewers’ recommendations before final acceptance.
Authors are responsible for providing sources cited in the manuscript upon request from the editorial department as part of the standard editorial process.
All authors must sign an appropriate disclosure form and a copyright transfer/authorship form.

Commentary
Include a proper title for the article and list the names, titles, and affiliations of all authors. Also list the name, address, telephone number, and email address of the corresponding author. List all funding sources for the study/article.
Original research articles must include a structured abstract. Standard sections may include: Background; Objectives; Population and Setting; Methods, and Study Design, if relevant; Results; and Conclusions.
The entire text, including tables, must be provided as a double-spaced Word file. Cite any graphic elements (tables, figures, algorithms, appendices) consecutively in the text, but place actual tables/figures/other graphic elements at the end of the article, after the references.
The conclusion is not a summary of the article. Rather, it should add something new to the article, a point of view or comments related to the rationale for the article and what the article adds to the literature.
List, as applicable, contributions, disclosures, credits, conflicts of interest, financial interests, and other information pertinent to the creation of the article.
Cite references consecutively in the text using superscript arabic numerals. Do not use automatic numbering or footnote/endnote features. Use the most up-to-date, post-1990 references, citing primary sources only. Try to limit the number of references to 35. Place the complete reference list at the end of the text under the heading References.
Use reference format according to the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition.2
Examples:
Cite all tables, figures, algorithms, other graphics, and appendices in the text, but place these elements at the end of the article, after the references. Type the title and content of all tables as well as all figure titles and captions in Word.
Figures and other images must be provided as individual graphic files and saved as PDF files at high resolution (300 dpi). Attach an individual PDF for each graphic image. Images not saved appropriately will delay the peer-review process significantly.

Review articles provide up-to-date information on a topic of general interest based on literature published by experts in the field of oncology navigation and survivorship. Review articles must conform to the general format requirements and should present the following:
A case study should describe a specific patient in a situation that is significant to the practice of navigation. Case studies should conform to all applicable general format requirements and would address:
If possible, a case study should provide several teaching points that would educate navigators on best practices for managing the type of patient situation being described.
Commentaries discuss topics related to any aspect of oncology navigation. Manuscripts should conform to all applicable general format requirements. Commentaries do not necessarily include references.

Articles undergo an initial internal review for topic appropriateness and manuscript format.
All manuscripts are subject to a strict, double-blinded peer review (by 2-3 reviewers), and acceptance is based entirely on that review. Reviewers look for the accuracy of the information and data presented, as well as the relevance to the objectives of JONS.
All authors’ identifying information is removed from the article for the purpose of the peer review, but any study funding information is provided to reviewers. Authors are notified as soon as possible regarding the initial decision of acceptance or rejection of the article. The majority of articles that are accepted for publication, however, will require revisions and resubmission. A second review is conducted when recommended by reviewers.
Routine editorial changes will be made by the journal editors to conform to house style and the AMA Manual of Style 11th ed.2 The edited manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author for review and final approval. Time from submission to publication is generally 4 to 6 months, but could be longer, depending on the peer-review and editing processes
Authors listed on the manuscript should include only those who have made a direct contribution to the content of the article, in accordance with the authorship criteria provided by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).1 Credit for authorship is based on a substantial contribution to (1) conception and design, or data analysis/interpretation, (2) drafting or revising the article critically for intellectual content, (3) final approval of the version to be published, and (4) agreement to be accountable to all aspects of the article’s accuracy and integrity. These 4 criteria must all be met.1 Those who have contributed to the article but do not meet these authorship criteria should be listed in the acknowledgement section at the end of the article.
Provide authors’ highest academic degree and professional affiliations. Also provide the name, address, telephone number, and email of the corresponding author. The corresponding author is responsible for securing signatures for all forms from all authors and for getting final approval from all authors for the version of the article to be published.
All authors are required to sign an Authorship/Copyright Transfer Form, assigning all copyrights for the manuscript to Amplity, publisher of JONS.
For an article to be considered for publication, authors must adhere to the manuscript formats described in this document and follow the general ICMJE guidelines.1
All authors must disclose any relationship that could be viewed as a potential conflict of interest, based on ICMJE guidelines,1 including any financial interests, direct or indirect, and any affiliations or involvement (competitive or amiable) with organizations that have a financial interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript. Each author must independently sign the Financial Disclosure Form in accordance with the ICMJE guidelines.1
JONS discloses all information regarding employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, grants, or other financial sources with potential conflict of interest in relation to a manuscript, or if authors discuss any products or services with such commercial interest. All published articles will include disclosure statements listing any relationships with real or potential conflict of interest for all authors and for the manuscript/research.
Any information regarding funding, grants, or other financial compensation must be listed on the title page of the manuscript. The funding company/entity cannot intervene in the editorial content and process.
Identifying personal information, such as patients’ names, initials, or hospital numbers, should not be included in the submitted article, unless the information is essential for the accuracy of the article and the patient (or parent or guardian) has given written informed consent to publish that information. In this case, the patient must be shown the manuscript and the way the information is being used. Authors should provide a signed informed consent when submitting the article and remove any identifying details that are not essential for the purpose of the article.
When reporting experiments on human subjects, the authors should indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation.
Authors must secure written permission to reuse or adapt any graphic elements (table, figure) from a previously published (online or in print) article or from any other source. Provide the letter of permission when submitting the manuscript, or indicate that permission will be provided, and cite the original source with the graphic element in the manuscript. Authors are responsible for acknowledging all information that has been published previously.
The Journal of Oncology Navigation and Survivorship (JONS or the journal) receives advertising support for its print and online editions and maintains editorial integrity through policies that define the Editorial/Advertiser relationship:
It is the responsibility of the advertiser and its agencies to adhere to appropriate legal requirements and regulations (for example, FDA regulations regarding advertising and promotion).
If correction to a published article is needed, the JONS publishes the correction as soon as possible, detailing the changes from the original version. The correction is listed in the Table of Contents in the print issue, as well as online. Readers are encouraged to submit comments or critiques of any article. All relevant comments are published in the print journal and online and authors are asked to respond to such comments.
