Keeping Up, So Patients Don’t Fall Behind

March 2026 Vol 17, No 2

As we observe Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded that awareness is only meaningful when it leads to action. Progress in cancer care doesn’t happen in isolation; it grows through collaboration, shared learning, and the unwavering dedication of professionals who ensure patients never fall through the cracks.

Patient navigators are at the heart of this work. They guide individuals and families with compassion and expertise, helping them through the complexities of care. While this issue of the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship highlights advancements related to colorectal cancer, it also takes a broader look at the realities of oncology practice today.

In this month’s entry in our ongoing Health Equity series, created in collaboration with the Alliance for Equity in Cancer Care, we learn how an important, evidence-based tool developed by the NCCN to measure and incentivize equitable cancer care is being reimagined to address the unique needs of community-based practices.

Our Navigation Refresh column also returns, offering practical guidance and perspective for seasoned and emerging navigators as they meet patients with colorectal cancer.

Alongside these pieces, we feature original research examining how critical gaps in care are being identified and addressed in communities and health systems across the United States.

This issue also marks the launch of 2 new initiatives that reflect our commitment to keeping up with the fast-paced evolution of the oncology landscape.

Bits of Brilliance provides pint-sized pearls of wisdom drawn from the latest research findings, delivering clear takeaways without requiring readers to sift through lengthy studies. Enjoy our inaugural installment, which focuses on—you guessed it—colorectal cancer!

We’re also pleased to announce the creation of Navigation in Action, a new initiative that invites navigators to share real-world stories from the front lines of care. These stories will inspire and educate, offering a firsthand glimpse at the challenges, observations, and interventions navigators face and bring forth every day. Scan the QR code today to submit your story!

At its heart, this issue is about honoring the important role you play. Whether you’re navigating the challenges of colorectal cancer care, championing health equity, or connecting patients with the resources they need, you are a vital part of this ongoing story. Together, we can ensure that as cancer care continues to advance, no patient is left behind.

Thank you for your dedication and for being such an integral part of this community. Let’s keep learning, sharing, and growing, because progress happens when we move forward together.
