A Word From Dr Harold Freeman

Dr Harold Freeman

I am writing to express my gratitude for the launch of the nomination phase for the Harold Freeman One Team Award.

Extraordinary advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment have occurred since the “War on Cancer” began, yet many Americans have not fully benefited—particularly those who are poor or uninsured. This is more than a medical and scientific issue, it is a moral one; people should not have to die of cancer because of disadvantage.

Clinical and nonclinical patient navigators play an essential role in advancing equitable, patient-centered cancer care. They ensure that patients receive timely, personalized, and compassionate care while addressing barriers that often exist along the cancer care continuum. In doing so, navigators save lives.

I am honored to see the Harold Freeman One Team Award move forward into its first nomination cycle and encourage my colleagues to submit nominations for individuals or teams whose dedication inspires and whose work is bringing a positive change to patients’ lives.

In honoring the winners of the Harold Freeman One Team Award, we will also recognize every patient navigator for their critically important, lifesaving work.

Sincere thanks to all patient navigators,

Harold P. Freeman, MD
