Dear Esteemed Readers of the Oncology Navigation Community,
It is with great excitement and profound respect for your work that I introduce the Dr Harold Freeman One Team Award, a new honor celebrating the incredible contributions of oncology navigators across all specialties.
Named after the founder of patient navigation, Harold P. Freeman, MD, this award is about honoring not only your expertise but also the compassion and resolve you bring to your work every day.
It’s about celebrating rising stars and seasoned professionals who ensure patients feel supported throughout their cancer journey—from diagnosis to survivorship and beyond. It is about recognizing those who go above and beyond, who innovate, who advocate, and who inspire.
The award will be presented at the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators Annual Conference, where recipients will receive a plaque and certificate. We encourage you to nominate deserving colleagues or teams who are actively involved in patient navigation and who consistently demonstrate excellence in advancing the field.
Nomination details and deadlines will be highlighted in upcoming issues of the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship. This is your chance to shine a spotlight on the remarkable work being done across oncology navigation and to honor the legacy of Dr Freeman by celebrating those who continue to uphold his vision.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication to your patients and for embodying the spirit of this vital specialty. Together, we continue to transform lives and redefine what it means to deliver exceptional, patient-centered care.
Warmest regards,
Hina Mehreen Porcelli Editorial Director Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship
I am deeply moved by the recent establishment of the Dr Harold Freeman One Team Award by the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship and the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators, and I would like to express my sincere thanks to all involved for considering me worthy of this high honor.
The concept of guiding patients in their journey across the healthcare continuum from the point of an abnormal finding to resolution and through survivorship has gained significant traction in the United States and, to some extent, worldwide. The result has been a narrowing of the national disconnect between discovery and delivery of care by increasing timely access to cancer care, especially for those at a disadvantage.
This award recognizes the accomplishments of all navigators who contribute immeasurably to the narrowing of said gap, and to the concept of putting the patient first. Among the heroes to be honored for various levels of achievement in reaching these goals are the navigators, many of whom are eligible to be nominated to receive the Dr Harold Freeman One Team Award.
Sincere thanks to all patient navigators,
