Letters from Lillie

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this issue of JONS, the official publication of the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+).
This issue of JONS also comprises a wealth of learning guides dedicated to providing patient navigators with information about the core competencies of navigation.
This issue includes pertinent information that covers a wide breadth of topics, all of which are applicable to your navigation work with patients with cancer.
Welcome, Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) members, to 2016! We have created another great issue of the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship (JONS) for you, and I hope you will agree after you read it.
Lillie D. Shockney, RN, BS, MAS, introduces the December issue of the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship, commenting on long-term survivorship care, the Sixth Annual Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators Conference highlights, and more of this month’s content.
With navigation and certification, the multitude of terms such as nurse navigator, patient navigator, lay navigator, and even GPS nurse can lead to confusion. The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators is working to develop certification plans that are tailored to oncology nurse navigators. Cancer survivors are often confused too, for different reasons: they may have a difficult time remembering all the details of their cancer treatment. Survivorship care plans may be able to help.
This issue of JONS provides a preview of the posters that will be on display and presented at the Sixth Annual AONN+ Conference, October 1-4, 2015, in Atlanta. Below is a selection of conference abstracts. Look for more abstracts in the coming weeks.
Lillie D. Shockney, RN, BS, MAS, stresses how survivorship care plans can help measure the impact on patients’ ability to engage in self-management, make lifestyle changes, and be satisfied with having a sense of direction for future monitoring and screening.
Happy spring! I hope that everyone is thawing out from a long, cold winter and is ready to enjoy spring. Get outside and reenergize yourselves! This issue of the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship is filled with information that I guarantee you will value and use.
