Resilience

May 2024 Vol 15, No 5

We value the art of practicing medicine.

We also value Art as Medicine
to lift the human spirit.

To honor these values, we partner with artists touched by
cancer to tell their story and showcase their works of art.

Meet Deysi, JONS Artist in Residency

Deysi Barzallo

In 1999, at the age of 8, Deysi (pronounced “Daisy”) was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Art was a source of comfort for Deysi and helped her cope with the illness. All these years later, she is still creating art and works as an oncology social worker. She is a member of the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) and a patient navigator at Susan G. Komen.

Deysi says that art helps her to process emotions and become more engaged in her work as an oncology social worker. Her art has been featured in exhibitions at the Friedman Brain Institute’s “Art of the Brain” and in Women Celebrate Women, El Barrio’s ArtSpace.
