Most people have heard of palliative care, but few truly know the meaning. Palliative care is related to, but not the same as, hospice care.

In the United States, navigation is now an established part of the healthcare system. But in other countries it is still a brand-new concept, according to Nancy Peña, OPN-CG, Founder and Director of Navegación de Pacientes Internacional (NPI) in Guatemala and oncology navigator at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center.

Danelle Johnston, MSN, RN, HON-ONN-CG, OCN, and Tricia Strusowski, RN, MS, recapped their recent presentation from the ACCC 46th Annual Meeting & Cancer Center Business Summit, in which they discussed the National Evidence-Based Oncology Navigation Metrics: Multisite Exploratory Study to Demonstrate Value and Sustainability of Navigation Programs. The study was launched in June 2018 as a collaborative effort between the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+), Chartis Oncology Solutions, and the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Researchers and clinicians have sought the best ways to implement survivorship care plans (SCPs) after cancer treatment. Despite the strong consensus-based recommendation by the Institute of Medicine and other influential stakeholders, limited evaluation data continue to be a barrier to successful implementation of the guideline.

When Harold P. Freeman, MD, first coined the phrase “navigation” for breast cancer patients in New York City in the 1990s, I am not sure anyone realized the impact that this nursing specialty would have on other populations of women in the future. Through his medical practice, Dr Freeman noted that patients who were poor and/or of minority status presented with advanced stages of breast cancer and were more likely to die of their disease.

Nutrition plays an important role throughout the continuum of lung cancer. It is well documented that the best protection from lung cancer is to avoid smoking, but it is also protective to eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

In patients with heavily pretreated relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, subcutaneous daratumumab (DARA SC) demonstrated efficacy similar to the IV formulation (DARA IV), but with fewer infusion-related reactions, according to Saad Z. Usmani, MD, from Levine Cancer Institute/Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC. These findings come from an update of the phase 3 COLUMBA trial presented at the 2019 ASH Annual Meeting.
